The New Galleries are in La Latina

The central neighborhood of La Latina is one of the oldest and most charismatic in Madrid and is adjacent to other areas of great tourist interest such as Austrias, Sol-Gran Vía, Lavapiés and Madrid Río. Its streets, of medieval origin, are mostly irregular, narrow and winding, leading to squares.

The commercial offer in this area has a great protagonist, the Rastro, one of the main attractions of the city. Beyond this main activity of which the New Galleries are a part, we mention some of the suggestions that accompany this mythical Madrid street market.

Art of tapas

La Latina is known for being a noble area of Madrid in the art of tapas on weekends. From the time of tapas in its terraces or eating in trendy restaurants, to that moment when the afternoon and the night is the owner of its nightclubs.

Tapas, good music, cocktails and signature liquors, but also shopping and mid-afternoon strolls, as in the mythical Rastro. We highlight some of the most emblematic places in the neighborhood.

La Latina Theater

The neighborhood is named after Doña Beatriz Galindo, a humanist and teacher in the family of the Catholic Monarchs. She was the famous ‘Latina’ for being the Latin teacher of the queen and her daughters. To her we owe the foundation of the Hospital de la Latina on the site where the Teatro La Latina is located today.

This theater is one of the most traditional and traditional theatrical venues in Madrid.

Some of the greatest actors of the national scene have performed on its boards.. It usually releases works with a certain satirical or alternative thematic that give it a special atmosphere closely linked to the neighborhood in which it is located.

Barley Market

The Mercado de la Cebada is one of the largest and most traditional food markets in the city..

The current market (built in 1958 and refurbished in 2013) has two floors with an area of more than 6000 square meters of commercial use in which about 80 stores are distributed

Streets to discover on foot

Walking through La Latina you can discover a lot between churches, theaters, bars, stores with authenticity and talent, beautiful buildings, museums, etc.. Its streets, of medieval origin, have mostly irregular, narrow and winding paths that lead to charming squares.

For example, very close to the emblematic Puerta de Toledo, we find the

Royal Basilica of San Francisco el Grande

with canvases by Goya or Zurbarán and the fourth largest dome in Europe, and just a few minutes away, the

VOT Hospital

, a historic-artistic building from the 17th century that houses a hospital from the 21st century, the most historic hospital in operation in Madrid.
